A woman surrendering peacefully.

When the armour becomes too tight: A journey from control to love

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”Anaïs Nin

For most of my life, I believed that power, control, and strict, regimented boundaries were my closest allies. They were my safety and security, the invisible scaffolding that held me upright as I walked through the world. They protected me, shaped me, and gave me a sense of certainty in places where life felt unpredictable.

Over time, these qualities became my suit of armour.
I wore it with pride.
I felt strong inside it.
I felt safe.

For a long time, that armour truly served me. It helped me navigate experiences that required resilience and structure. It supported me through moments where I needed something solid to lean on. I was proud of who I was becoming.

As life continued to unfold, something subtle began to shift.

I started to notice a quiet restriction, a tightening, almost like my inner world whispering, “You’re growing faster than this armour can expand.” What once felt empowering began to feel confining. The strategies that had protected me were no longer aligned with the person I was becoming.

Then came a period of life that brought everything to the surface.

Anger. Sadness. Frustration. Hurt.
Not new emotions, simply louder ones. They rose up with intensity, asking not to be controlled or suppressed, but to be acknowledged. They wanted space. They wanted breath. They wanted to be felt.

During a deep meditation, sitting with all these heavy, tangled feelings, something profound emerged:

To feel better, I needed to surrender.

Not collapse.
Not lose myself.
Simply soften.
Release the emotional weight I had been carrying for so long. Allow the armour to be removed, consciously, intentionally, so something new could enter.

In that moment, I realised something essential:

The armour wasn’t meant to be thrown away in anger or shame.
It was meant to be
released with understanding.

I didn’t need to reject power, control, or boundaries. I needed to transform them, to let them evolve into their higher expressions.

Power could become love.
Control could become trust.

Boundaries could become compassion.
Fear could become understanding.

I didn’t need to fight the anger, sadness, frustration, or hurt. I needed to honour them, thank them for how they had protected me, and allow them to shift into softer states: empathy, clarity, forgiveness.

This wasn’t a single moment of change.
It was slow, steady, practice.

Every day, I chose love.
Every hour, I chose compassion.
Every moment, I remind myself that safety could come from softness as much as strength.

I am still learning this new way of being, and I suspect I always will be. And I know this:

Living from love changes everything.

When you begin to love yourself, your world reorganises. The people around you shift. Your nervous system relaxes. Your boundaries become cleaner, kinder, and more aligned. You still hold power, control, and structure, only now they arise from love rather than fear.

So, if you find yourself in a quiet moment, gently ask:

Where am I holding on too tightly?
And what might open if I allow something softer, kinder, and more loving to take its place?

Your armour served you.
It kept you safe.
And now, you are allowed to release it.

You are allowed to soften.
You are allowed to expand.
You are allowed to choose love.
